Sion, Sing, first published in 1965 as part of Biblical Hymns and Psalms Vol. 1, it was written by Lucien Deiss, C.S.Sp. A member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, Fr. Deiss was actively involved with liturgical reforms to the Lectionary during Vatican II. In the Liturgy of the Hours, Sion Sing is used during Ordinary Time for Morning Prayer. It's really a shame that so few of Fr. Deiss's hymns can be found on the Web. I'm guessing it's a copyright thing. Do you know if anyone has made a CD for purchase of his works? Thanks.

DeleteBefore starting this website, I wasn't all that familiar with his work. I think he is an exceptional composer.
With the words: you can always count on him to be theologically correct, yet they are often expressed simply as a prayer to God.
The music: Well constructed melodies suited to the lyrical content. A challenge for sure, but I as a whole - I think a good hymnal needs some selections that ask more of the choir or congregation than they may think they are capable of.
Fr. Deiss didn't have low expectations for these hymns, he wanted us to rise to the occasion - to lift up our hearts to the Lord.
I've been search the web fir the words of these song. Somehow the resonate in me so powerfully. Though have heard it sung in church many times as a child, but the effect now is astounding. Please posts the lyrics if able.!
ReplyDeleteThe problem I have with such hymns is this: I paid almost $200 for the 4 volume set of the Liturgy of the Hours. You can't find the sheet music or even the melody line anywhere. Therefore it cannot be sung. It is Tuesday Week III Morning Prayer's regular hymn, and nobody knows the tune, so it can't be sung. Kind of kills the buzz.
